Rock Star Music Stand
(Not for sale)
27” wide, 12” deep, 58” tall.
One of my relatives has a random connection with musician Graham Nash. And although I have never actually met Nash, somehow I ended up with a beautiful slab of Claro Walnut from his old hot tub. I know what you’re thinking, I had the same reaction… huh?! I guess if you are a rock star you get to have a hot tub built out of Claro Walnut.
Well, my dad is a guitarist and fan of all things Rock n’ Roll. And I had been planning to build him a music stand for several years. So I figured since this piece of memorabilia fell into my lap, it was the perfect time to build him one. I kept it a surprise until the day I gave it to him.
This music stand is built completely with the wood from that walnut slab, which is shown in the last photo. The bookmatched panels on the podium came from the nicest part of the slab. It’s not made for a single piece of sheet music. My dad uses large, heavy 3-ring binders full of “standard” chord charts when he plays music. So I had the challenge of building a stand that was sturdy and robust, and would not tip over. The height and angle of the podium are adjustable with easy-to-use knobs.
In case anyone is wondering, the guitar is my dad’s Paul Reed Smith.
