Rock Star Side Table

(Not for sale)

24” wide, 16” deep, 24” tall.

One of my relatives has a connection with musician Graham Nash and gave me two small slabs of beautiful Claro Walnut which was supposedly salvaged from his hot tub several decades ago. I used the first piece to build my dads music stand (see “Rock Star Music Stand”)

This time, instead of cutting it up into pieces I decided to repair the cracks with butterflies (Macassar Ebony) and leave the slab as-is. The original sliding dovetail joinery from the hot tub can still be seen along two edges of the piece.

The base is made out of Mahogany salvaged from an old teacher’s desk, given to me by a friend. You can still see the nail holes and other “character traits” from the desk.

Spacers between the base and top, as well as feet under the base give it a “floating” look. The miters in the base are splined on the tablesaw. The four “legs” come together in an “X” in the middle and are biscuited together.

Finished with sprayed conversion varnish.
