Art Studio

120 square feet.

While I was waiting for permits for the addition I put on my house, I got impatient and wanted to start building something. So I built this “She Shed” / art studio / office / homework lab / podcasting studio / etc. in our back yard.

There was a three-year gap between when the structure was completed and when I actually finished the interior, so for a while it was just used as a general storage shed. But I recently completed it with electrical, insulation, drywall, flooring, lighting, and finally all of the built-in cabinetry.

When we built the 500 square foot addition on our house, I worked with a licensed contractor but I did about 60% of the work myself. This studio represents the largest project I’ve ever undertaken 100% myself, from foundation to finish. I love home construction, and hope to build an entire house myself one day.

My wife is an artist, and uses the space to display her art, hold open studios, and run her business. But we also use it for our home office as well as a distraction-free area for our kids to do homework.
